My first Tweetup

I attended my first Tweetup today at McAlister’s Deli near 86th and Michigan in Indianapolis.  I was already following everyone there, so it was great to actually meet them, associated a face to their avatar/posts and learn more about what everyone does.

The concept of Tweetups is really great.  People who may or may not know each other getting together for “real” social networking coupled with online social networking.  One feeds the other and the whole cycle starts again.

I’m sure I would never have met most of the people there if I hadn’t been on Twitter.  Great people. Lots of fun.  And passionate about social media, marketing and serving their customers.  I can’t wait to meet more fellow Tweeple!

WordPress for the iPhone

Now I have the option of posting anywhere, anytime with the WordPress app on my iPhone. I’m pleasantly suprised at how well it works.

I’m not sure I’ll ever need to post something right NOW, but it’s nice to have that option. :-)

Testing the Flock browser

I downloaded Flock the other day and have been experimenting with it on and off.  It’s a social media/networking browser that lets you share and post to your various networks from within the browser by dragging and dropping.

Want to post a link to Facebook?  Just drag the URL over to the sidebar where you’re logged in and it instantly connects you to Facebook and start the message for you.  Same thing for Twitter, Flickr and many others.

You can easily find and share photo and videos and even post to your blog right from the browser without logging in at your admin page. (I wrote this post from Flock) There’s a very nice tutorial that walk you through the main features. If you’re into social media, check out Flock. I think it’s got some great potential.

Beer & Blog

It looks like Douglas Karr from Compendium Blogware (he also has his own blog here) is starting an Indianapolis Chapter of Beer & Blog.  Oh no! Combining technology, blogging and beer could lead to increased (or decreased, depending on how you look at it) productivity for me!

Beer and Blog is a weekly meet up based on bloggers helping bloggers over beers.  I can’t wait for the first meeting in Indy!

Netbook fever

OK, I’ll admit it.  I’m dying to get one of those ultra-small netbooks.  I happened to see one from Acer the other day at WalMart that had been “rolled back” to $300.   8.9″ screen, in blue with 1GB of memory and a 120 GB hard drive.

$300?  That’s almost disposable.  I’m being to see more use for these kinds of computers, especially after recently traveling and tying to use my 17″, 10 lb. Dell on an airplane.

If the price drops much more, I may be “forced” to get one.  Let me know your feedback on Netbooks and any recommendations you may have.

Facebook Takes Over Top Spot, Twitter Climbs

Facebook recently turned 5 (has it really been 5 years aleady?) and has jumped into the lead for the most visited social network.  And, more interestingly, Twitter has rocketed to #3

Even though I’ve had a Twitter account for quite a while, I’ve only been really using if since last August or so.  I know just in that time, I’ve found many other people who’ve discovered its power (and addictive qualities).  How do you use Twitter? And do you see it becoming the king of conversations?

Free screen grabs and videos with Jing

For years, I’ve been using Alt+Print Screen and Photohop for screen shots.  And, I’ve used either Camtasia or Catpivate to record onscreen demos or walk-thrus.

Jing (by Techsmith, the same folks that make Camtasia) is a free tool that easily lets you do screen captures and videos and share them with others.

So far, it’s proven very easy to use.  And it’s just the right tool for recording short screencast to share on blogs or social networks.  For intense product demos a more powerful tool is probably need.  But for most uses, Jing is an excellent tool.  Try it out and let me know what you think.

The change to WordPress

I’ve switched out my blog to use WordPress now instead of TypePad.  I already pay for website hosting with 1and1, so rather than pay TypePad for a blog, too, I figured I could use a free blogging platform such as WordPress.  Plus, there are so many themes, widgets and plugins for WordPress, I thought it would be fun to experiment with them.

I post occasionally on this blog about marketing and technology items that I find interesing and hopefully you will too. My work blog can be found here:  Membership Marketing & Technology

What type is your blog?

I found an interesting tool today.  Typealyzer analyzes the text used on your blog (or any website, really) and gives you some insight into the author’s type of thinking and the language they use.   This is a neat way to see how you are communicating and how your messages may be resonating with your readers.

This could also be useful to your organization if you have more than one staff person blogging.  You can learn the differences in their styles and find ways to speak to different audiences.    As with most tools like this, don’t “typecast” yourself or worry that your “speaking the wrong language” due to the results.  Simply use the informaiton gained to become a better communicator.  Feedback is good!

Oh great. Nice timing.

Just as I’m cranking up my “professional” blog for WebLink on membership marketing and technology, Jessica Hagy posts one of her very insightful graphs.    Good thing I’m doing more than just blogging!
